A Beginner’s Guide to SXSW

A Beginner’s Guide to SXSW

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world converge on our city for an incredible event that celebrates music, film, and interactive media: SXSW. For those who have never been to SXSW before, it can seem overwhelming. We've put together this beginner's guide to help you navigate the festival and make the most of your experience.

2023 SXSW Dates: Fri, March 10 - Sun, Mar 19

1. Get Your Badge Early

One of the most important things to remember when attending SXSW is to get your badge early. This will grant you access to all of the events and venues that are part of the festival. Register for your badge online to avoid any last-minute hassles. There are several badge options available, including  Music, Film, and Interactive badges. You can also purchase a Platinum badge, which gives you access to all three categories.

2. Plan Your Schedule + Travel

Once you have your badge, it's time to start planning your schedule. There are hundreds of events taking place during SXSW, so you'll want to narrow down your options and decide which ones you want to attend. Check out the schedule below and consider using the SXSW GO app to keep track of your plans. You'll also want to make sure you give yourself enough time to get from one event to the next, as many venues are spread out across the city. SXSW also has shuttles, walking maps, and street closures displayed on their site here.

3. Explore Austin

While SXSW is a major draw for visitors to Austin, there's so much more to see and do in our city. If you're new to the area, take some time to explore the local food scene, check out our beautiful parks, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Check out the rest of our blogs for food, activity, and park recommendations if you need some inspiration.

4. Stay Connected

Be sure to follow the official SXSW social media accounts to stay up-to-date on the latest news and announcements. You can also use the hashtag #SXSW on Twitter and Instagram to connect with other attendees and share your experiences. And don't forget to download the SXSW GO app, which will give you access to schedules, maps, and other helpful resources.

Enjoy the festival, Austin!
